Overview

XPRIZE Healthspan is made possible thanks to the generosity of Co-Title Sponsors Hevolution and SOLVE FSHD, in addition to other individual benefactors. GSK, a global biopharma company joins XPRIZE Healthspan as the Official Pharmaceutical Industry Partner.

Barrier

Traditional medicine focuses on treating symptoms of injury, illness, or disease once they develop. This reactive system extends life, but doesn’t proactively improve health, leaving millions grappling with poor quality of life and related economic challenges in their later years.

Breakthrough

A proactive, accessible therapeutic that reduces the risk of chronic age-related diseases, increases human healthspan, and extends quality of life well into our later years.

Impact

If these trials are successful, we will prove that it is possible to improve health as we age. This prize will help us begin to create guidelines and new solutions for healthy aging.

Success would profoundly change our approach to aging and positively affect quality-of-life and healthcare costs. Working across all sectors, we can democratize health and create a future where aging is full of potential.

How To Win

The winning team of the $101M XPRIZE Healthspan must demonstrate that their therapeutic treatment restores muscle, cognitive, and immune function by a minimum of 10 years, with a goal of 20 years, in persons aged 50-80 years. The therapeutic treatment must take 1 year or less.

The winning team of the $10M FSHD Bonus Purse must demonstrate that their therapeutic solution substantially improves FSHD-relevant muscle outcomes based on: 1) fat infiltration in muscle via any imaging modality or change in a relevant FSHD biomarker, and 2) corresponding improvement of muscle function, compared with controls. The therapeutic treatment must take less than 1 year.

Prize Categories

The competition is operated across two tracks:

XPRIZE Healthspan is a 7-year, $101 million global competition to revolutionize the way we approach human aging. To tackle this problem, competing teams will develop and test therapeutics that restore muscle, cognitive, and immune function by a minimum of 10 years with a goal of 20 years, and extend healthy life.

Awarding of the Grand Prize is indexed to improvements in function relative to age-related declines expected over 10-years ($61M), 15-years ($71M), or 20-years ($81M). Two $10M Milestone Awards will be divided amongst advancing teams, totaling $20M in Milestone Awards.

Launched alongside the 7-year, $101 million XPRIZE Healthspan global competition, the $10M FSHD Bonus Prize challenges innovators across the globe to find novel solutions for FSHD. Competing teams in the FSHD Bonus Prize will develop and test therapeutics that demonstrate substantial improvement in muscle function through a therapeutic treatment lasting 1 year or less in persons with genetically confirmed FSHD.

An additional $10M is reserved for the FSHD Bonus Prize, which includes a $2M Milestone Award, and $8M awarded to the First Place team.

For more information, please refer to the Competition Guidelines.

How To Register

The global competition was officially launched on November 29, 2023, with the Primary Registration period concluding on December 20, 2024. Interested teams may still seek entry by submitting a request for Discretionary Late Registration. Visit the Resources page for application instructions.

Competition Materials

Welcome to the Resources page for the $101M XPRIZE Healthspan and $10M FSHD Bonus Prize. We will be updating the contents of this page with more resources as they become available. Additional topics not covered below should be queried to healthspan@xprize.org.

In an effort to bring awareness to information on funding opportunities that may be applicable for any of our competing teams, we will periodically post funding announcements that are open to the public and related to healthspan and healthy aging.

Please note, XPRIZE Foundation, Inc. encourages every team to diligently review every opportunity listed on this resource page and the requirements set by these third parties. XPRIZE is listing these funding opportunities on an “as-is” basis and makes NO guarantee on any decision made for an award.

Primary Registration closed in December 2024 but teams may still request to apply to join the competition through Discretionary Late Registration. The following are introductory resources that provide important information for all teams interested in competing.

XPRIZE has sole discretion to register and qualify additional teams across XPRIZE Healthspan and the FSHD Bonus Prize from the close of their respective registrations until the Discretionary Late Registration deadline. Teams that register during this period must meet all preceding registration and submission requirements and pay a late registration fee between USD $10,000 (Discretionary Late Registration after Milestone 1; February 2025 - April 2026 ) and $100,000 (Discretionary Late Registration after Milestone 2; Aug 2026 - July 2027).
Please follow these instructions on how to submit a late application for teams who did not complete a Qualifying Submission for Milestone 1.

  • Submit a 1-page Letter of Intent to healthspan@xprize.org. Email should be titled as “[TEAM NAME] Request for Late Registration: Letter of Intent Included" or another closely similar format.
    • Your Letter of Intent should include a brief overview about your team, your proposed therapeutic, your rationale for its use in XPRIZE Healthspan, and any supportive data available. You may either include the Letter of Intent as a file attached, or write it out directly in the email.
    • Clearly make mention if your team is affiliated with a University, Non-Profit, or other type of academic or public research institution. You may be eligible for a waived or discounted Late Registration Fee (teams must be able to provide proof of eligibility if requested).
  • The XPRIZE Healthspan staff will screen all incoming requests, and the Executive Director will approve or deny the request.
  • If your late registration request is approved, we will provide further instructions to complete a Registration Form, Registration Fee, Read and Sign the Competitor Agreement, and finally upload a Qualifying Submission on the Prize Operations Platform (POP).
  • Once a late-registrant team has completed all of the above activities on POP, XPRIZE Healthspan will assign these ad-hoc applications to the Judging Panel to determine if the application merits them as a Qualifying Team.
